While certainly not a new concept, remote working took a major surge this year, amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to the digitally advanced era that we live in, remote working saved thousands and thousands of companies worldwide from collapsing. But, what started as a temporary solution is now slowly becoming the new normal and looks like a trend that is likely to stay. According to Business Insider, many major companies all over the world continue remote working and have no plans of changing that in the near future. Recently, Indeed and Google have announced that they will be extending their work from home policy till summer 2021, and will continue to accommodate remote working indefinitely. Other companies such as Microsoft, Air BnB, Uber and American Express have also extended their work from home policies. In fact, many companies have followed the suite of Google and have included remote working as a permanent solution.
The rise of remote working has paved a path for various digital trends one of which is the use of collaboration software such as Workplace by Facebook, Workspee, Slack, Convo etc. The use of such software brings all the employees together regardless of wherever they are and provides a channel for seamless communication.
Is remote working effective?
While remote working may have skyrocketed as a necessity during the pandemic, studies have shown that it was a trend that was already in a rise. With telecommunication growing rapidly over the last decade or so, it has become easier for employees to work from home. All that is needed for it is a working device and a fast speed internet. But, is work from home effective? Well, the answer may vary from some, but research has shown that it does come with a set of advantages. Some of the advantages of remote working are:
- Employee ease and comfort
There is no doubt that working from home is much more comfortable than working in an office. There is no restriction of time and space and in many cases you may get to fix your own schedule. There are no ‘office protocols’ that need to be followed and you can work wearing whatever you like while sitting or even lying down wherever you like. Working from home gives you a chance of spending more time with your family and allows you to simultaneously run your personal and professional life.
- Cost effectiveness:
Working remotely is cost effective not only for the employees but for the employers as well. By making their employees work from home, companies can save money that would be otherwise spent on office settings, equipment and travelling. This can greatly improve the revenue of the company.
- Increased employee satisfaction and retention
In a recent survey conducted by Buffer, that included around 3500 employees from all over the world, it was concluded that a whopping 98% of employees would like to work remotely at some capacity. Not only that, 97% of the employees would recommend remote working to others as well. Moreover, 70% of the employees claimed that they were happy with the hours they spent working remotely and 19% claimed that they would want to work more hours.
When you have employees who are satisfied, your employee retention rate would also increase.

- Increase in employee productivity
There is no doubt that happy employees are more productive than the ones who are not. When employees are satisfied with their job and get to work at their own comfort level, there definitely will be an increase in their productivity level. For example, employees of American Express are 43% percent more productive than the ones who are not. In another survey by Canada Life, homeworkers rated their productivity level 7.7/10 as compared to office workers who rated it 6.5/10.
- Not having to commute
How many times have you been late to work because of bad traffic? Or have you ever missed work because your car broke down or you don’t have any means of transportation? There is a huge probability that your answer to these questions would be yes. Not having to commute is perhaps one of the biggest advantages of remote work. Commuting everyday can be stressful which adversely affects the performance of the employees. Also, not having to commute can save employees a lot of money.

Challenges of remote working and how to overcome them
Remote working may have many advantages, but it does come with its set of problems. The biggest problem that is faced by remote workers is collaboration and communication. According to the same survey conducted by Buffer, as discussed above, these two factors were concluded to be the biggest issues faced by remote workers. In today’s world where collaboration has become an integral part of corporate culture, managing remote teams for Workspee tasks is becoming a challenge.
When it comes to remote meetings, physical distance between the employees can become a huge issue. Because of being far away, there is usually a lack of trust and interdependency between the employees. These factors can come in the way of achieving effective teamwork. To overcome this factor, the employees need Workspee solutions that bring the employees together and create a virtual work space. Workspee has a video conference feature that makes team meetings easier by eliminating the physical distance factor. So, wherever your employees are geographically located, they can come together and share a virtual space.
Having a single platform has numerous other benefits. Features like newsfeed, audio and video calls, going live and knowledge center create a virtual workplace that is similar to a real time office experience. These features also make collaboration easy by not only improving the communication between the employees, but by also giving a platform where employees get to share their ideas with the entire workforce. Moreover, team building activities can also be employed through the software, making collaboration and teamwork stronger.
A collaboration software creates a sense of community between the workers by bringing them together, regardless of their geographical location. With remote working on the rise, having such a software can solve all the communication and collaboration issues and create a smooth and seamless virtual office experience for the employees.
